Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, I’m Kate.
Upon graduating from university with a first class honours degree in textile design, I went on to work as a pattern cutter in a UK based high end lingerie company. Although I enjoyed the job, I didn't feel I was creatively fulfilled. My first love was always embroidery, and knowing just how time consuming hand embroidery could be, and with a lack of choices career wise, I started looking at ways to offer my own designs that would be commercially viable. It was then that I invested in a digital embroidery machine and computer program that would allow me to recreate stitched motifs that I could make into home and gift ware. As I did not get much training in digital embroidery whilst at university, what I learnt is largely self taught and it has taken me years to develop a style that I am truly happy with. Having grown up reading books by Beatrix Potter and Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge, my work is full of little characters and nature inspired touches.
What type of craft do you specialise in?
Digital embroidery.
Describe your creations:
All of my designs start life as a sketch that I then convert to a digital embroidery file using a design program. The motifs are then stitched out using one of my digital embroidery machines, and then finally made into a finished product. I always try to use the highest quality materials available, whether it is pure wool for the Christmas stockings, or Irish linen for the glasses cases and cushions.
What would you like to share with our audience?
I love finding out about other artisan's design processes, so I would love to share how my creations develop, my inspiration, and any issues I have to overcome along the way.
Do you sell at markets, fairs, or stockists?
Yes. As well as selling on several platforms including my own website, Country Living Marketplace, Not On The High Street and Etsy, I also sell at artisan markets around the Midlands. I have also been honoured to have been stocked in several prestigious shops including Fortnum & Mason, Liberty, Highgrove House and Abel & Cole.
