The new website for The Mutes, an original Australian rock band formed in Townsville in the early 1980s, falls firmly into the latter category.
At Sophisticated Cloud, we were delighted to create a new digital home for the band, bringing together their music, history, photography, lyrics and archive material in one distinctive online experience.
A story worth preserving
The Mutes were part of the Australian pub rock scene of the early 1980s, building a following through live performances, original songs and the unmistakable energy of the era.
Their story began in Townsville and took them from rehearsals in a mechanic’s workshop to packed pubs and regional tours across North Queensland and beyond. Their independent 1982 cassette release, Muscle Music, became an important part of that story, alongside the friendships, adventures and memories created along the way.
Decades later, the band’s story still has plenty to say.
The challenge was to create a website that could bring all of these elements together without making the experience feel like a conventional archive. Instead, the new site gives The Mutes a contemporary digital presence while allowing the character of their history to remain at its heart.
